(05-26) 18:41 PDT Larkspur -- Striking Golden Gate Ferry workers will return to their jobs Sunday morning after a one-day strike - in time to for the increased ferry service needed to accommodate theGolden Gate Bridge celebration, union officials confirmed Saturday.
Members of the Inlandboatman's Union of the Pacific, the union that represents boat workers, set up a picket line Saturday at the Larkspur Ferry Terminal to draw attention to concerns about their pay, job security and working conditions. After working without a contract for 11 months, they voted to go on strike after a meeting Friday night.
But they will return to work Sunday morning, said Marina Secchitano, regional director of Inlandboatman's Union of the Pacific. She said the work stoppage by the 35-member unit was not timed to disturb the bridge celebration. The strike vote was taken to try to approve a contract in time to receive retroactive pay, according to a timeline set by management, she said.
"There will be a lot of people celebrating that bridge, which was made with all union labor," Secchitano said Saturday. "What about treating the workers with the same level of respect?"
The Golden Gate Larkspur and Sausalito route will be running extra service from Larkspur Sunday starting at 4 p.m. and running every half-hour until 8 p.m., Mary Currie, spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, said Saturday.
At 10 p.m., the ferry will provide return service every 30 minutes until midnight, Currie added.
