Labor Activists to Rally Outside Aegon-Owned Transamerica Pyramid

Rank-and-file members and leaders from the Teamsters Union andInternational Longshore and Warehouse Union will rally outside the Transamerica Pyramid in response to troubling reports from the Dutch dockworkers union, that insurance and pension giant and Transamerica parent company, Aegon is looting their members' pension fund.

In 2007, Aegon acquired Optas (formerly the Harbour Pension Fund) for ???1.5 billion and with it, the pension assets secured for the sole benefit of some 60,000 Dutch dockworkers. Aegon has since claimed the assets as its own and argues that the dockworkers and port employers have no special rights to them.

Teamsters Western Region International Vice President Chuck Mack and ILWU International President Bob McEllrath will speak at the rally. Mack will announce that the Teamsters are calling on Congressional leaders to close the loopholes in the TARP rescue fund that allows foreign financial institutions like Transamerica to purchase a small community bank for the sole purpose of securing bailout funds and transfer them to the overseas corporation.
