TWC News: Transportation Workers Union Denounces Vision Zero Arrest of Bus Driver
Play now
The Transport Workers Union is lashing out at Mayor Bill de Blasio and his Vision Zero initiative days after one of its members was arrested.

Reginald Prescott, 57, was charged for not yielding the right of way after police say his B44 bus hit and killed a 78-year-old man in East Flatbush Tuesday evening.

Police officers say they both had the light, but the driver didn't see the pedestrian.

Vision Zero makes it a misdemeanor for a driver to hit a pedestrian or a cyclist who has the right of way.

Union officials say bus drivers work to prevent accidents every day.

In a statement, Union President John Samuelsen said, "This arrest was an absolute outrage and must not stand. Day-in and day-out, we deliver a tremendous service to this city under extremely adverse conditions. Subjecting transit workers to such treatment is nothing short of despicable."

Samuelsen says union members want elected officials to amend the portion of the Vision Zero law that requires an arrest if a driver is involved in a deadly pedestrian accident.
