April is Workers Memorial Month To Remember Those Workers Killed And Injured on the Job.

This year’s event will also honor the over 250 chil- dren and crew that were killed in the Sewol Fer- ry Disaster in Korea on April 16, 2014 due to the lack of health and safety conditions, and lack of training of the temporary crew

on the ship. The Sewol mothers recently visited the United States to get justice and an in- dependent hearing.

April 18 has also been declared a day of International day of action against the Trans Pa-
cific Partnership, TPP. This is directly connected to workers health and safety since it is
through these so called “free trade” agreements that there has been deregulation of health
and safety protection and privatization of public services harming all working people.
At the same time, deregulation of workers comp in the US and throughout the country has also meant that seriously injured workers are not get- ting prompt healthcare and many end up permanently disabled and homeless. We need to rally
all working people to stand up for injured workers and their right to healthcare and compensation.

Today, in the United States, workers health and safety is under the threat and health and safety whistleblowers are being bullied and are afraid to speak out due to real concerns about retalia- tion. In fact, OSHA lawyer Darrell Whitman who will be speaking at the meeting is a Federal lawyer who inves- tigates OSHA whistleblowers and he himself has been retaliated against for seeking to protect these whistleblowers.
